Making The Best of It

Are you enjoying your summer so far? It certainly has been an unusual season with the restrictions and limitations due to the covid 19 virus. Numerous outdoor activities have been cancelled such as, music festivals, sports, along with some amusement and water parks. Most restaurants and pubs that are open have limited seating, and the list can go on. While some businesses are put under great strain because of these limitations, others are thriving.

During these times, I think people are trying to make the best of the circumstances. For instance RV, canoe, kayak, camping gear, and outdoor equipment sales are soaring since the restrictions from the virus took place. Those are fun activities that help us enjoy the outdoors, and make it easier to keep our distance from other people.

Also, on the flip side, people are staying home and enjoying their personal surroundings by making improvements and adding outdoor entertainment areas to their property.  Pool sales, home improvement, and lawn and garden stores in numerous areas are seeing unprecedented sales, making it hard to find some of these products due to supply and demand. Family members, and a good friend have experienced it firsthand as they struggled to find outdoor lounge chairs and wicker furniture. When they can be found in stock the prices are much higher than previous years, making it hard to afford them on a limited income.

However, I would like to encourage you to visit some of your local second hand shops, or view your local newspaper for estate sales in your area.  Not only will you be supporting small businesses, you might enjoy treasure hunting.  And you just might find exactly what you’re looking for at a much lower price.

Below are pictures of second hand items that were purchased and refinished, to give them new life.

The porch swing in the above photo has been freshly painted and decorated with denim solid and striped throw pillows, giving it the comfort of a fresh coastal theme.

The above vintage rattan furnishings were painted in a royal blue.  The cushion fabric is done in a bright lighter blue color, and beautiful accents of hot pink are incorporated on the throw pillows and scatter rug, making this space feel vibrant and alive.

Vintage wicker furniture  left with it’s original paint, and a wood hope chest painted blue and distressed, gives this modern sun-room a rustic cottage feel.

I love the creativity in combining an antique settee and reupholstered vintage chair, paired with bohemian, and Indian decor.  Giving it a true eclectic look.

This traditional furniture is brought into a new era with just a few coats of white paint, newly upholstered cushions, with a contrasting fabric on the throw pillows.  Making this outdoor space feel like a cozy extension of the inside.

A metal utility cart  spray painted in a fresh lime green has been  repurposed as a portable outdoor bar/table with tree trunks as stools.
