What Story Does Your Home Tell?

What Story Does Your Home Tell?

Did you know a home can tell a story?

I’ve always had an interest in real estate and house design. Many years ago I took classes and acquired my real estate license. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a feasible occupation for me while raising four children. Even though I never pursued a career in the field, I still have a passion for it.

A couple of years ago God opened doors to start up another company flipping houses. At times it can be a lot of work and very trying. Despite that, I try to have the attitude that the Bible suggests; “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23). I enjoy it immensely, and find it occupationally satisfying.

The Walk Through In A Home

My husband is also owner of an Estate sale company called “Allay Estate Sales” so we frequently visit other people’s residence to evaluate the contents of the clients home. While consulting and doing a walk through with the homeowner or estate representative, I’m taking in the details and design of the home.

After admiring the structure of the home, I bring my focus back to the reason why we are there, to evaluate the contents in the home to determine if it qualifies for a future estate sale. As I’m doing that, the owners story begins to unfold.

What The Home Reveals

The home and the contents can often reveal many things, such as:

  • The persons marital status
  • If they had children
  • What they did for a living
  • Interests and Hobbies
  • Financial status
  • Religion
  • Physical condition
  • Personality, through style.

By just spending a little time in the home, the atmosphere leaves me with either feelings of peace or feelings of chaos.

Recently, I wondered what kind of story my home would tell. Do people feel peaceful entering my home or do they feel a sense of chaos? Can visitors see what’s important to me by what I display in my home?

My Heart Is A Home

My mind continued to wander (like it usually does), and one thought lead to another. As a result, I thought of these scriptures in The Bible; “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own” (1 Corinthians 6:19) ”

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory” (Ephesians 1:13&14).

According to the scriptures if Jesus is my savior, my body is where God’s Spirit resides. So I must ask myself these questions: What kind of spiritual home am I providing for His Holy Spirit? Is it a home that is pleasant, and comfortable? Is it a peaceful place for Him to dwell, or is there strife in my heart? And last but not least; what kind of a story does my life tell?

A Home With God

Not only does the Holy Spirit reside in me, the Bible says He was also given to me as a deposit from God. A deposit for the inheritance, the home in heaven where I will live with God for all eternity.

Until that day, I will enjoy renovating and decorating these temporary homes here on earth; with the knowledge that someday I will have a permanent home where Jesus, the ultimate designer, is preparing a place for me.
